Experts question why the Australian government does not borrow high-performance firefighters "hibernating" abroad to fight fierce wildfires.
New South Wales fire department chief Greg Mullins said dozens of planes that were spending the winter in the Northern Hemisphere could be ready "within a week," according to the Sydney Morning Herald.
He said the aircraft worth testing was the Bombardier CL-415, a two-rotor aircraft capable of dropping 6,000 liters of water and drawing water from lakes, rivers and oceans. "Australia has not touched them yet," said Mullins.
Jon Dee, founder of the organization DoSomething, with a house in danger of a wildfire in the Blue Mountains, said eight Hercules planes specially equipped to fight fires were left in the US.
In an email exchange accessible to The Sun-Herald, the US Forest Service said the planes were "probably left unattended" but they had not received any offers from Australian authorities.
