According to another study published in The Lancet Public Health, blameless use of alcohol is one of the main causes of dementia, especially early dementia. Researchers conducted a comprehensive study of large numbers of adults hospitalized in France for alcohol or alcohol related events between 2008 and 2013.
In total, 1,109,343 adults discharged from the hospital in France were diagnosed with dementia and included in the study. Of these, 35,034 cases of dementia were caused by alcohol-related brain damage, and 52,625 cases of other alcohol-related disorders. Of the 57,353 cases of premature dementia, 22,338 (38.9%) were caused by alcohol-related brain damage and 10,115 (17.6%) had an additional diagnosis of alcohol use disorder (uncontrolled alcohol use, indiscriminate).
The analysis showed that alcohol use disorders tripled the risk of all types of dementia. Alcohol-induced disorders are associated with a risk of cardiovascular disease and other dementia even after the elimination of alcohol-related brain damage.
