Joan Ruth Bader (Bader Ginsburg's maiden name) was born in the Flatbush area, Brooklyn, New York, in 1933 and the child of a Jewish immigrant couple. At the age of 17, Ruth suffered from the pain of her mother passing away from cancer.
In 1954, Ms. Ruth graduated from Cornell University and married Mr. Marty Ginsburg and changed her name to Ruth Bader Ginsburg. When she was pregnant with her first child, Bader Ginsburg was demoted from the social security office. In the 1950s, it was still quite common to discriminate against pregnant women. This caused Ms. Bader Ginsburg to completely conceal her second pregnancy.
