Tsunamis evolve very differently according to the type of wave: they contain enormous energy, spread at high speeds and can travel large distances across the ocean with only a little energy. A tsunami can cause damage on the coast thousands of kilometers where it arises, so we can have many hours of preparation from the time it formed to the time it hit a beach, it appeared a long time after the seismic wave formed from where the incident spread. The energy per meter long in waves is proportional to the inverse of the distance from the source.

Even a single tsunami can involve a series of waves with different heights. In large waters, tsunamis have a very long cycle (the time it takes for a wave to reach a point after the previous wave), from minutes to hours, and the length of the tsunami is hundreds of kilometers long. This is very different from the waves formed by normal winds on the ocean surface, they usually have a period of about 10 seconds and a wave length of 150 meters.
